Inclusive & Adaptive Dance Instructors Workshop

Presented by the Dance Council in collaboration with Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, this daylong workshop is designed for dance educators, studio owners, creative art therapists, and anyone interested in learning how to teach inclusion-based arts, which focuses on creating an open environment in which children of all abilities can participate.
Through lectures, demonstrations, movement experiential, and role-playing, participants will gain knowledge, confidence, and skills to use adaptive dance with a variety of populations and settings.
Registration
The registration fee for the workshop is $60, and $55 for Dance Council Members.
Price includes lunch, and workshop materials.

The welcome session will also include an overview of the Adaptive Dance Committee, its mission, vision and programs offered to date.
•10:00-10:50 Chance to Dance: Adaptive Dance in a Hospital Setting
Presenters: LaRae Steadman, Octavio Lopez
This session will give an overview of the ‘Chance to Dance’ program at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. ‘Chance to Dance’ is offered in partnership with the Dance Council. It is part of the Adaptive Dance outreach program begun in 2003. Through demonstration and experiential roleplaying led by this year’s ‘Chance to Dance’ teachers, participants will increase their awareness of the different kinds of physical disabilities, learn how to modify basic dance steps, and most importantly be able to include children with physical impairments in your dance studios and communities.

•11:00-11:50 Dancing with the Stars: Adaptive Dance in a Dance Studio Setting
Presenter: Mary Whiting, M.S., ADTR
This session will demonstrate how dance/movement therapy and creative movement is currently implemented at Chamberlain Performing Arts Center of Plano, TX through an adaptive dance program for children ages 3-14 with special needs such as Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorders, pervasive developmental disorders, and sensory integration dysfunction. Through demonstration, case presentations, and experiential learning, participants will gain a better understanding of how to work with cognitively impaired children by learning creative movement activities.
•12:00-1:00 Lunch & Learn: Wings Dance Company
During lunch, workshop attendees will watch a video of Michelle Owens-Pearce’s dance company “Wings.” Wings is a company of high school students based in Austin, TX with disabilities who tour and perform in public schools.
•1:00-1:50 Dance For All: Adaptive Dance with a Variety of Populations and Settings
Presenter: Suzy Rossol Matheson, MA, ADTR, NCC
This session will highlight a variety of movement activities used to engage all age groups. A selection of props will be introduced to expand movement repertoire and enhance therapeutic goals. Wheelchairs will be used to increase participants’ comfort with maneuvering and handling. Participants will have an opportunity to dance and move with the wheelchairs by creating a group dance.

Participants will break up into small groups and
interact with some of the ‘Chance to Dance’
participants. attendees will have a chance to
observe adaptive dance instruction, choreography,
and techniques utilized by the ‘Chance to Dance’
instructors at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital
for Children.
•3:00-3:40 Break Out Session 2
This is a time for participants to break up in small groups and discuss ways to apply material covered in the workshop to their own work. An assignment will be given to each group that will be presented at the closing.
